Workshop : L’ammoniac vert en Algérie, a l’AHK Algerie avec participation Hybrid (FR/EN)

AFEI Participation in an International Workshop on Green Ammonia in Algeria
The Algerian Forum of Energy and Industry (AFEI) participated, on April 29, 2026, in an international workshop dedicated to green ammonia in Algeria, organized by the Algerian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK Algeria), within the framework of the international H2Uppp program.
This high-level event brought together representatives from government institutions, industrial and financial companies, and academia to discuss strategic issues related to the development of green ammonia, considered a key lever for the energy transition and multisectoral decarbonization.
On this occasion, AFEI representatives actively contributed to the discussions through several scientific and technical presentations, notably:
• Prof. Kamal MOHAMMEDI:
“Green Ammonia: A Lever for Multisectoral Decarbonization and Accelerating the Energy Transition”
• Dr. Ali BENALI:
“Comparative Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Ammonia: Conventional vs. Low-Carbon”
The workshop also addressed major topics such as the techno-economic challenges of green ammonia production, international industrial perspectives, and opportunities for cooperation between Algeria and its partners, particularly within the framework of Power-to-X projects.
In this context, this dynamic aligns fully with the strategic orientations of the Algerian state aimed at developing new and renewable energy, enhancing national resource valorization, and positioning Algeria as a key player in the value chains of green hydrogen and its derivatives. The development of green ammonia thus represents a strategic priority at the intersection of energy, industrial, and agricultural policies.
Algeria has significant advantages for developing this sector, including substantial solar and wind potential, existing energy infrastructure, and recognized expertise in the gas and petrochemical industries. Green ammonia also represents a promising solution for hydrogen storage and transport, facilitating its export to international markets, particularly in Europe.
Within this framework, several structuring pilot projects are under consideration, notably in the Arzew industrial zone, in partnership with Sonatrach and international stakeholders, focusing on the development of integrated hydrogen–ammonia (Power-to-X) value chains. These initiatives illustrate Algeria’s commitment to concretely establishing its position in the decarbonized energy market in the short and medium term.
As a reminder, ammonia is the second most produced synthetic chemical worldwide, with nearly 80% used in fertilizer production, as well as applications in explosives and various chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Its transition to low-carbon production methods therefore represents a major strategic challenge at both national and global levels.
Through this participation, AFEI reaffirms its commitment to supporting structuring initiatives that promote the energy transition in Algeria, fostering the emergence of a national ecosystem around hydrogen and its derivatives, and promoting national expertise in these forward-looking fields.
